In layman’s terms, backlinks are links that go from one website to a page on another website (also called “inbound links”, or “incoming links”). Backlinks are counted by Google and other top search engines as “votes” for a certain page. Pages with lots of high-quality backlinks from trustworthy and similar niches of websites typically score well in organic search results.
Why backlinks are so important for a website?
The backlinks are important for the following reasons:-

Search engines such as Google consider backlinks as references. In general, the more votes (backlinks) your web pages obtain, more the likely it is that they’ll rank for important specific keywords.

How are we aware? The number of backlinks from different sites (referred domains), which is one of the website ranking variables we’ve looked into several times, highly correlates with organic search traffic.

Attribute 4: The link should be a “Dofollow” link
Google and other search engines ignore links that contain the no-follow tag.
Nofollow links (also known as links that are not taken into account by search engine ranking algorithms).
Do follow links creates the great majority of web links.
Most of the links that have nofollow tags aren’t particularly valuable, to begin with. For example, nofollow links are often present in these resources:

- Press reports
- Pay-per-click ads
If these links are nofollow, they don’t matter because they will not help in SEO.
Attribute 5: The link comes from a domain that has never linked to you before
